Subject: Travelling to the United States

KwaZulu [del] to All
Hi all,

I need a bit of advice... I am planning to travel to visit some friends in Florida in the summer, but the best deal I can find is from London to Miami. Basicly when I land, I need to get from Miami Airport to, or as close to Anthony, Florida as possible

So with that being said, what would be the cheapest way to travel this sort of distance? Train? Bus? Coach?

Also, if someone could tell me what time the school summer holidays out there start and finish, I think that would be very useful too

Thank you in advance, and I hope to be visiting your country soon! :)

I had to look up Anthony, Fl

Judging by its location I would think taking a Bus is your best bet.

Summer Break here is from early June thru Labor day. I can't imagine Florida is much different.

Thank you very much for your quick response :)

I may have more questions in the coming weeks

You also might want to think about trying to book airfare through Miami into Ocala, FL's airport. That's about 17 miles from Anthony. I think bus travel in Florida might not be very easy - there is almost no public transportation in that part of the US. You are better connecting to Ocala and taking a cab for $30, assuming that the price isn't much more to go there instead of just Miami.

You also might want to fly into Jacksonville, Tampa or Orlando. All will be cheaper to travel to Anthony, since they are MUCH closer. I find it hard to believe that those airports aren't about the same price (or cheaper) as Miami, since the summer is not a popular time to travel to Florida. It is VERY hot that time of year.

Well Summer is Hot in Florida, but somehow, european tourist doesn't care. When i used to live in South Beach, in August in the streets you only listen to people speaking in italian, french or german.

As people suggested if Anthony,FL is not far from Okala, don't arrive in MIami. From Miami to Okala is a 5 hours drive (i did it once). Orlando is probably the best option for you as you might find some good deals from London because it is off season for the parks (Disney and Universal, 4 for the first 2 for the second).

I did actually find an Orlando flight for a similar price... I think I will be going there instead

edit: and I did hear that Ocala is quite close... I will look into getting there, and from there I can be collected

Hello guys. I'm going to be in US this summer, in Harrisburg. Anyone from that city or near?! :)

Also i have a question:

I'm going to arrive in Washington, so can someone let me know with info about ways to get to Harrisburg? I've checked greyhound lines, but the last bus goes before i arrive.

I live about an hour from Harrisburg. The best way to get there is by train, actually. Are you SURE you are coming into DC? Which airport? You are way better coming into either Philadelphia or Baltimore-Washinton. Amtrak (the US train system) goes directly into Harrisburg.

Thanks for the answer :)

Well I am SURE i'l arrive in Washington, cause I already bought a ticket. The route to Philadelphia was more expensive than to Washington...plus not the best airlines...

If the best way is by train, than I'll ask later for a link to where I can book a ticket or just for some additional info. Atm its too soon, i guess middle may will be fine to re-ask :)

So , an hour from Harrisburg, may i know what town? :)

Which Airport in DC? It complicates things a bunch if you are coming into Dulles.... You might make up the cost savings by going from DC to Harrisburg - From Philly's airport it would be about $30 or so. :(

I live in a suburb of Philadelphia.

I've checked my ticket... there is written : Washington IAD... i guess it means Dulles airport?!
2011-04-12 20:15:52
yes that's dulles.

Yes. Dulles. Ok, you are going to have to bounce around a bit assuming you can't rent a car. My suggestion would be to take a cab to Union Station from Dulles (that's going to cost you a bit) to Union Station, in Downtown DC.

A less expensive way is (according to a website I found): To reach Union station from Dulles Airport one can take (apart from Cabs/Taxi and shared shuttles) the 5A bus towards L’Enfant Plaza and get down at the Rosslyn Metro station from where take the Blue Line to Largo Town Center metro station. From there take the Red Line towards Silver Spring and get down at Union station metro station.

You then will take a train from Union Station to Harrisburg. It should cost you $66 or so. You are going to have to change trains in Philadelphia.

Should have posted something before you booked your airfare :).

Thank you for this detailed information.

Hmm, I found that a bus ride to Harrisburg costs around 25-30$...

Another question: I have moldovan driver lincense. Will I be able to drive, or in US is valid only us driver lincence? If i need US driver lincense, can I take the test to get a DL? OR it is restricted for students that come to US at summer?

PS I've applied for a Greed Card, and hopefully I'll get it :) So in this summer, i'll make somekind of "scouting" :)

I looked on Greyhound.com, and didn't see any bus routes from DC to Harrisburg. Odd.

I think the closest metro station to Dulles is West Falls Church, just past Tyson's Corner, if you're going to take a cab I would go to that one, and make your way down to Union Station from there.

I just found this, ten bucks one way for a bus ride to West Falls Church:

the cab ride is about 40, btw
