Simple (or not?) question: how are the world rankings calculated for NTs?
2006-05-28 02:53:32
This is a quite accurate aproximation:

y = mx + n
y -> number of points that a team will win (os lose if it's negative)
x -> difference of ranking
m -> a constant: -0.02876
n -> depends on the match result, for example:

1-0 -> n=29.29
2-1 -> n=24.16
3-2 -> n=19.54
4-3 -> n=16.79
5-4 -> n=14.93
2-0 -> n=37.59
3-1 -> n=36.09
4-2 -> n=32.02
3-0 -> n=42.14
4-1 -> n=42.14
6-3 -> n=36.93
5-0 -> n=46.61
8-0 -> n=48.95

Let's check it with an example :)

Argentina - Espana 0:2

Before the match:
Espana 2000.78
Argentina 1888.87

Calculations:
y = mx + n;
y = -0.02876 * 111.91 + 37.59 = 34.37

Expected rankings after the match:
Espana 2000.78 + 34.37 = 2035.15
Argentina 1888.87 - 34.37 = 1854.50

it seems to matter who is higher in the rankings too. After the Can-US tie Canada went up and the US down, even though the US got through.

When the poor team play 1:1 with Poland, dont get any ranking point?
2006-05-28 13:39:42
Oh yes, for a tie n=0. Then just follow the formula :)

Ed: By the way, now that the ranking has been updated you can see that the result was correct :P

I will check it next week, thx :)

How do you calculate "n"?
2006-11-01 02:01:15
There is no formula for that, just the table.

I looked how the points changed in the first matches of NTs (when they had all the same amount of points), and depending on the results, n got different values.

Well, I tried to interpolate a formula when the loser team doesn't score, but it's not too accurate:

n = 50,06777668 - 45606651 / (POWER(x + 10,4; 6))
x -> number of goals of the winner.

Mmm... I see. Thanks, nice formula...

This has probably been discussed somewhere but i can´t find it.

How does the world ranking for National teams affect the qualification for the world cup?

Is there any "seeding", like the top 10 teams will be in group A, 10-20 in group B and so on wich means that the teams in Group A won´t meet eachother in the qualification round?

try the [WC] Qualifications thread

we should really try and use less deceptive titles :P

up!
2006-12-02 01:39:51
and Why don't we implement World Ranking for teams?
2006-12-02 01:44:21
It is implemented for teams:P
